significant increase in the number of traffic fatalities

Significantly more people died on germany’s roads in the first half of 2017 than in the same period of the previous year. More than 1,500 people died in the first six months – a 6.2 percent increase.

According to preliminary figures from the federal statistical office, 1536 pedestrians, cyclists, car drivers or motorcyclists died in traffic accidents. The number of people injured fell slightly by 0.2 percent to around 183,900, the statisticians announced in wiesbaden on tuesday.

The significant increase in death traps in 2017 was also due to the fact that fewer deaths than usual were registered in june 2016, a federal statistics officer explained. It is not clear, however, why fewer road users lost their lives at that time. Weather may have played a role.

Most people died on roads in bavaria (263), followed by baden-wurttemberg (223) and north rhine-westphalia (222). In contrast, only seven road users died in the small city-state of bremen.

People in brandenburg had the highest risk of fatal accident. According to the statistics, there are 29 traffic fatalities per million inhabitants here. Lower saxony and thuringia followed in the next rankings.

The three city states of berlin, hamburg and bremen were well below the national average – which the statisticians explain by the fact that they "generally have lower values due to their settlement structure". The risk was also rather low in north rhine-westphalia, the most densely populated state, with 12 fatalities, and in saxony and schleswig-holstein, with 17 fatalities per million inhabitants.

According to the statistics, a total of around 1.28 million accidents (plus 2.7 percent) were registered between january and june, but most of them involved only metal damage. People injured in 142,800 crashes.
