Unicef: a girl is infected with hiv every three minutes
Despite the successes in the fight against AIDS, the worldwide epidemic is far from over. "It is also far from under control," warns unicef.
According to the report, there are around three million HIV-infected children and adolescents worldwide. Two-thirds of teenagers who get infected are girls, he says.
Systematic discrimination puts girls at particular risk, says unicef executive director henrietta fore. "In most countries, girls and women have less access to information, health services or simply not enough power to say 'no' to unprotected sex." The children's aid organization documents the devastating consequences of the aids epidemic for young people. In 2017, 130,000 children and adolescents under the age of 19 died of immunodeficiency diseases worldwide, and 430,000 were infected with the HIV virus. On a positive note, the number of new infections has almost halved since 2000.
Prevention and aid must now be targeted at the younger generation, unicef stresses. For especially in developing countries, the proportion of children and adolescents is rising. Already nine out of ten HIV-positive children in the world live in Africa.
