Indonesian investor takes over inter milan

A group of indonesian investors has taken a majority stake in italian football club inter milan.

"Everything is signed," said president massimo moratti after meeting with donor erick thohir and his partners. 70 percent of the shares in the club is bought by thohir from moratti. Italian media speculated about a purchase price of about 300 million euro, officially no figure was mentioned. With this the era of moratti ends after 18 years, but his family wants to stay involved in the business.

"My family and i will continue to live this extraordinary adventure together with the investors with the same dedication and love that unites us with inter," moratti emphasized. He does not yet know if he can remain president. "We will see," said the 68-year-old. In a statement, the club said the investors and the moratti family were working together to make the club even more competitive.

The 43-year-old thohir had been negotiating with moratti for months about a shareholding after the heavily indebted serie a club had repeatedly been in the red. The asian media mogul, who already has stakes in soccer and basketball clubs in indonesia and the USA, is investing in the club together with two partners. "I am an entrepreneur, but first and foremost a fan and a lover of sports. I can’t wait to bring our passion and international experience to this fantastic club and its fans," he said, according to the club release.

Thohir is the second foreign investor in italy’s serie a. In 2011, a group of americans had joined the current league leaders AS romo. The newspaper "tuttosport" reported on tuesday that inters local rival AC milan is looking for a financial backer in the united arab emirates.

Moratti had taken over inter in 1995, after the club had already belonged to his father angelo from 1955 to 1968. Under massimo moratti, the club won five championships and the 2010 champions league, which is why many fans revere him. "There’s the raw love for a particular thing and at the same time the satisfaction and relief at the thought of having put it in good hands," moratti said after the emotional decision for him.
