Ethiopia submits funding request application to Global Fund

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia June 5, 2017 – Ethiopia submitted joint TB/HIV and malaria funding request of US$351,608,887 to Global Fund to support HIV, Tuberculosis and Malaria programs for the period 2018 to 2020.

The Malaria and Joint TB/HIV funding request submissions were made on Monday 22nd May and Tuesday 23rd May 2017, respectively, through Country Coordinating Mechanism of Ethiopia. Most of the grant will be used to procure Commodities and lifesaving medicines for HIV, TB and Malaria.

The Funding Request application was jointly developed by an all-inclusive funding request writing teams with representatives from government, civil society organizations, and persons living with or affected by HIV, TB and Malaria, key population, adolescents and young people, development and implementing partners among other stakeholders. Different consultations were conducted to engage and solicit inputs from all stakeholders especially from people living with AIDS and representing people affected by TB and malaria. In addition, stakeholders were highly involved in program reviews conducted for HIV, TB and Malaria and national strategic plan revisions for TB and malaria programs. All CCM/E members especially CCM/E Chair and Vice-chair provided continuous guidance and oversight during the writing process of the funding requests.

Between 2002 and 2016 the Global Fund has signed 15 grants worth USD 2.1 billion with Ethiopia. Of this, US$2.09 billion was committed and US$1.97 billion was disbursed.  Through the Global Fund and other partners more than 420,000 people living with HIV are on life saving drugs, over and over 1.5 patients have been diagnosed and treated for TB and more than 31 million nets have been distributed during the last campaign (2014/15)

The current funding requests aim to maintain the gains achieved so far and further reduce the burden of HIV, TB and Malaria. CCM Ethiopia has planned to submit the RSSH proposal funding request including the catalytic funding proposal at the August 2017 window to allow more time for strategic planning.
